The Michigan Ear Institute utilizes a team approach in the management of patients with Acoustic Neuromas (vestibular schwannomas) and Skull Base Tumors. Our team includes fellowship trained Neurotologists, skull base fellowship trained Neurosurgeons, Radiation Oncologists, and Neuroradiologists. Stereotactic Radiosurgery (Gamma Knife, Cyber Knife or Synergy systems) is a treatment option to treat certain brain and skull base tumors without risks of open surgery. Information from MRI/CT scans is used to localize the target tumor and deliver a highly focused ionizing beam of radiation to the target.

Radiosurgery for tumors was pioneered at the Michigan Ear institute beginning in 2005. Since then we have treated over 400 tumors of the skull base with state of the art delivery systems and machines. We have affiliations with Ascension Providence, Beaumont Health, and Karmanos. We are considered leaders in this field and have authored scientific journal articles and book chapters regarding appropriate patient selection and outcomes with radiotherapy. Our published data suggests excellent long-term hearing results and minimal dizziness or other nerve damage with Gamma Knife surgery.
